WINE TASTE

Only 5000 bottles produced. 100% Tempranillo.

VIEW

First, look straight down into the glass, then hold the glass to the light, and finally, give it a tilt, so the wine rolls toward its edges. This will allow you to see the wine’s complete colour range, not just the dark centre. We find the colour is a deep ruby with purple borders. We can see the drops running down, not too fast, not too slow. This tells us we are looking at a 14,5 % alcohol content.

NOSE

On the nose is a High aromatic intensity. You can smell the toasted notes coming from French barrels. Red fruits, vanilla.

This is an intense round, velvety wine, with very fine tannins and no rough edges. A well-structured wine. Full-bodied, mouth-filling and fresh with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. Plum is one of the primary aromas, acidity well integrated. Long wine, reminds one of roasted coffee, retronasal phase experiences aromas of fruits and balsamic.

It was 1917 when Alejandro’s grandfather inherited the vineyard from his uncle. Since then, it’s been passed down from Father to Sons for more than 100 years. They took care of the grapes, aged the wine in French barrels and bottled the wine just for themselves, before finally releasing the wine for public sale – A special moment!

The owners of this ancient vineyard were present during the Madrid International Film Festival in 2016. They watched the Spirit of The Bull Movie and fell in love with the story. On awards night, the Spirit of the Bull won the most prestigious Jury Award and also Best Director. The owners of the vineyard introduced themselves to the filmmaker and shared the story of their ancient family vineyard. Edwin Brochin was invited to visit the vineyard and sample some of their wine. Edwin fell in love with the wine and the story of this ancient vineyard. The rest is history.

Please note, we only have a limited quantity of these wines and they will taste differently depending on their individual year. So make sure to book your wine before we run out of our 2017 wine. If this does happen, you can book bottles from our 2016 range now. There are only five-thousand bottles in the world and are set to be available during 2021.

VARIETY 100% TEMPRANILLO

Tempranillo grapes have slightly thinner skins when compared to other black grape varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon or Teinturier. Skin density plays a big part during fermentation in determining the viscosity of the wine. So, if you like complex flavour.

Tempranillo might be for you! Tempranillo is most successful in climates that transition from cool to hot during the growing season.

The Appellation of Origin Vinos de Valtiendas, in the Northwest of the province of Segovia, borders on the Denomination of Origin Ribera del Duero and in the vicinity of one of the most beautiful natural areas of the region – the Natural Park of the Hoces del río Duratón.

Currently, the wineries in the area are concentrated in Valtiendas, which gives name to these Segovian wines, made with the same variety and with the same techniques as in the A.O Ribera del Duero. The Valtiendas Professional Grape and Wine Association was officially created in June by 2004. They are wineries that were founded in the year 1994 in the municipality of Valtiendas – an area recognized by all experts as one of the best in all of Castilla León to produce quality grapes. Navalilla in this area always produced high-quality wine. Everybody knows that kings and feudal only drink wine that was worthy enough.

Alfonso VII in the XII century, as told in the Latin Chronicle of the Kings of Castille, sent his people to Navalilla to have their wines. These Chronicles also tell us that Alfonso VII, the Emperor, continues with the conquering of southern Spain, and it was he who introduced the Cistercians Order in Spain. Even though they follow Saint Benito rules, Cistercians were not as considerate as Benedictine. They founded Santa María la Real Monastery located near Navalilla Valtiendas, nestled in the heart of Castilla y Leon and borders the celebrated Ribera del Duero region all along its northern half, sitting approximately 75 kilometres (46 miles) north of Segovia and the same distance from the Spanish capital, Madrid. The región is one steeped in winemaking history, proving to be a harsh yet ideal climate for high-quality grape growing.

Our Vineyard is called SPIRIT OF THE BULL (formerly known as Grandfather). It’s 2 hectares of land and sits at around 900 meters (2950 ft) above sea level. This favours quality grape growing here. Valtiendas grapes grow in soils made up of pebbles and Sandy clay. The rocky terrain in these regions also adds some mineral notes to Tempranillo wines.

Valtiendas has a continental climate, with hot, dry summers, and freezing cold winters. The diurnal temperature shift is just as pronounced, with hot days allowing the fruit to ripen, while cool nights help them retain freshness. The temperature during the day in this región can average between 70 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while at night the temperature can drop 30 – 40 degrees. This vine has adapted over centuries to handle the fluctuation and in turn, deliver a boldly flavoured wine.
